Armadale Health Service Emergency Department

TPS was engaged by East Metropolitan Health Service (EMHS) to carry out urgent works to expand the Emergency Department at Armadale Health Service.

Due to the urgency of the expansion TPS was approached by EMHS to complete the project on a Design and Construct basis as there was insufficient time to go through a design and then tender process.

TPS engaged Silver Thomas Hanley for architectural design and worked closely with service engineering teams to establish a design that was acceptable to user groups and then promptly move into construction phase.

The work consisted of constructing a new airlock to combine the Emergency Department entry with the Main Hospital Entry. It also included expanding the Emergency Department waiting area to approximately double the available seating capacity.

The challenges associated with this project were predominantly centred around the busy maintaining access to both the main entry of the hospital as well as the Emergency Department which operated 24/7. Dedicated walkways, barriers and pedestrian access were constantly monitored and amended in conjunction with Department Managers to provide clear, safe accessibility to the Emergency Department Staff.

The timeframe required for the completion of the Project was tight, so programming needed to be accurate and considerate of the live environment. Provision was made for night shift and early morning starts work as required to make the most of potentially quieter times.

Much to the delight of EMHS and the ED team more generally, TPS completed the construction over 2 stages and within 10 Weeks on site when otherwise the project may still have been in design stage. Such was the success of the project that it has highlighted an innovative approach for future projects that require immediate implementation.
